Another way of getting information is subscribing to a list. This works a lot like a magazine subscription. Everytime someone on the list sends a message to the list,
you get a copy. You can read it, delete it, save it, print it or reply to the list or to the poster only. Lists do tend to contain a lot of chat, but friends are made easily, and
information flows rather fast. There also tends to be less junk (called SPAM in internet lingo) than in Newsgroups. For information on currently available food related lists, check
Newsgroups:
How to access newsgroups:
From Netscape: Click on 'Window' on your top bar. Then Click on 'Netscape News'. That will put you into the news reader. The first time, (and anytime you want to make changes),
Click 'options' in the top bar, and then click on 'show all newsgroups'. This will pull up all the available newsgroups. This process could take a while. Then click on the box of the ones you want to subscribe to.
WARNING: This process could take some time.
From RS8 accounts: From your $ prompt, enter 'tin'. This will access the newsgroup reader. The first time, (and anytime you want to make changes), enter 'y'. This will pull up all the available newsgroups.
WARNING: The LC Newsreader has approximately 5,000 newsgroups. This process could take
some time. Go through all the newsgroup listings, keying in 's' on those you want to receive.
Once you finish, enter 'q'. This will exit the reader. The next time you enter 'tin', only the
newsgroups you selected will appear. To read messages, hit enter at the newsgroup title. This
will cause the message list to pop up. Hit enter on the message you want to read. Move through
the messages by hitting 'j' to move forward (down) and 'k' to move back (up). If you do not want
to read a message, ever, 'kill it' by holding down the key and pressing 'k'.
The Following are some newsgroups listings to get you started:
Here's some of my favorites:
- DC Dining
- Rec.food.recipes
- Rec.food.restaurants
- Rec.food.Baking
Well, that's just for starters. Try your own search using Yahoo, Altavista, Lycos or any other search engine. Look up that recipe you had once in a restaurant and never saw again.

And don't forget to look at the cooking club site often! LCCC
